What the Piston Rod Does

The piston rod moves continuously through the pump packings as the displacement pump cycles. During each stroke, the rod and packings work together to seal the fluid section while the pump develops the high pressures required for airless spraying.

Because the rod is constantly moving against the packings, its surface condition is extremely important.

Over time, abrasive coatings, contamination, dried material, corrosion, and normal wear can score, pit, or wear the piston rod. Once that happens, the damaged surface can quickly destroy a new set of packings.
